Outstanding vs overdue: what the two words mean for your udhar

Short answer

Outstanding is everything a transporter still owes you. Overdue is only the part that has passed its due date, which is the fill date plus the credit days you agreed. A transporter can owe a lot and be on time, or owe a little and be late. With 15 credit days, Rs 80,000 outstanding can have only Rs 30,000 overdue. Watch overdue first.

MDG Services makes Khata Kavach, so this page comes from the maker of one of the apps it may mention. It is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Facts about other apps are taken from their own websites and app listings on the date shown and can change, so check them there before you decide.

The two words

This page is for a petrol pump whose regular customers, transporters, take diesel on credit.

WordIn HindiWhat it means
OutstandingबकायाEverything the transporter still owes you today, whether or not it is due yet
Overdueदेर से बाकी रकमThe part of it whose due date has passed
Due dateभुगतान की तारीख़The fill date or bill date plus the credit days you agreed

Overdue is always part of outstanding, never more.

A made-up example

Made-up pump, made-up figures. Sharma Fuels gives Gupta Transport 15 days' credit for diesel. Today is 30 October.

FillAmountDue dateToday
8 OctoberRs 30,00023 OctoberOverdue by 7 days
18 OctoberRs 25,0002 NovemberNot due yet
25 OctoberRs 25,0009 NovemberNot due yet
TotalRs 80,000 outstandingRs 30,000 overdue

If Gupta Transport now pays Rs 30,000, counted against the oldest fill, outstanding falls to Rs 50,000 and nothing is overdue.

Why watch overdue, not just outstanding

Two made-up transporters:

OutstandingOverdueWhat it tells you
Transporter ARs 80,000Rs 0Every rupee is inside the credit days. No chasing.
Transporter BRs 30,000Rs 30,000Every rupee is late. Call B first.

A owes more and has no problem. B owes less and every rupee is late. Outstanding shows how much credit you have out, which you compare with the credit limit. Overdue shows where to act.

What to do about each

  • Outstanding: keep it under the transporter's limit, and look at the total across transporters with the debtor days calculator.
  • Overdue: send a reminder the same day. See how old it is in ageing bands. Decide in advance when to stop credit.

In Khata Kavach

A bill can carry a due day. The Today screen shows "Due on bills" with how many are past due, and the transporter's Bills tab marks a late bill "Past due". The transporter's page shows how old the balance is. See the owner's Today screen and numbered bills.
