For a petrol pump whose regular customers ask for udhar at the nozzle or the office.
Three rules for saying no
- Talk about the account, not the person. "The limit is Rs 50,000", not "I do not trust you".
- Offer something. Cash today, part credit, or a date to ask again.
- Use the same words for everyone, family included. Decide the rule beforehand: see who to give credit to and how to set a limit.
What to say
| Situation | In English | In Hinglish |
|---|---|---|
| A new customer | "We start credit after a few cash fills. Today it is cash; ask me again in [two weeks]." | "Naye grahak ko pehle kuch baar nakad par tel dete hain. Aaj nakad, [do hafte] baad phir poochhiye." |
| Over the limit | "Your limit was Rs [amount] and it is used up. Pay something today and I can give the rest on credit." | "Aapki limit Rs [amount] thi, poori ho gayi. Kuch abhi de dijiye, baaki udhar de dunga." |
| Old dues pending | "The old balance is still open. When it is cleared, credit starts again." | "Purana hisaab baaki hai. Clear hote hi udhar phir chalu." |
| A friend or relative | "The same rule for everyone, my family too. That is how credit keeps running." | "Sabke liye ek hi niyam, ghar walon ke liye bhi. Isi se udhar chal pata hai." |
| Nozzle man, owner away | "The owner decides credit. I can fill for cash now, and the owner will call you." | "Udhar malik tay karte hain. Abhi nakad par bhar sakta hoon, malik aapko phone karenge." |
Say only what is true: if the owner really decides, say so.
When to say "yes, up to this much"
A limit often works better than a flat no, because the customer keeps buying: "Credit up to Rs 10,000, and the old balance first." Work out the figure with the credit limit calculator. For a good customer a little over, decide in advance who may allow it: see a customer over the limit.
Put the rule on the wall
A poster says it so your staff need not. The udhar band hai poster page has six, from blunt to polite.
Where Khata Kavach fits
At the nozzle, the Khata Kavach phone shows a green, amber or red light for the limit the owner set, so the no comes from the rule, not from the nozzle man. The owner sets every limit.
Questions people ask
01Udhar kaise mana kare bina customer ko khoye?
Offer cash today or credit up to the limit, say it as the pump's rule, and use the same words for everyone.
02Udhar mana hai slogan kya likhein?
Polite ones that say what you do, such as "Credit only up to the agreed limit". Print one from the poster page or copy a slogan from it.
03How do I say no to a friend or relative who asks for credit?
Blame the rule, not the friendship: the same rule applies to everyone, family included. Offer cash today or a small limit.
04Udhar band karne ka tarika kya hai?
Decide the rule in advance, tell the customer once, say when it ends and keep cash fills open. See when to stop credit.
05What if the customer gets angry?
Stay calm, repeat the same sentence once, offer cash or a part payment, and call the owner or manager. Do not argue in front of other customers.
