5 litre test calculator for petrol pump nozzles: is the gap within the limit?

Short answer

Type what your 5-litre measure showed. The tool gives the gap in ml and sets it against the range that the Marketing Discipline Guidelines 2024 (MDG 2024), the oil companies' rules for their dealers, print for an inspector's finding: ±10 ml to ±25 ml per 5 litres MDG 5.1.2(a). MDG prints a range, not one figure; the exact limit is in the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Rules. Any variation in the dealer's own daily check means reporting it and keeping the unit off MDG 1.4.2(d).

The Marketing Discipline Guidelines 2024 (MDG 2024) are the oil companies' rules for their dealers, and bind dealers through the dealership agreement. This page is a plain-language explanation by MDG Services (a brand of VRUOOM Private Limited). It is not the official text and is not connected with or approved by IndianOil, BPCL, HPCL or any government body, so please check the current guidelines and circulars on the oil companies' own websites and with your oil company officer before you act.

Check one nozzle's 5-litre reading against the range MDG 2024 prints. What the dealer does every day is on the 5 litre test page.

MDG prints only the range. For the limit itself, read the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Rules, or ask W&M.

For example, a measure that held 4,985 ml in total is 15 ml short in 5 litres. That is 0.3 per cent: 300 ml in every 100 litres, 3 litres in every 1,000. It sits inside the range.

Note: your own morning check follows 1.4.2(d): tell W&M and your oil company, and keep the unit off until it is re-stamped MDG 1.4.2(d). The 15 days are for an inspector's finding MDG 5.1.2(a). MDG does not say how the two fit. Ask your oil company.

A customer who wants a check should read zero before delivery and what a customer can ask the pump to show.

Questions dealers ask

01What is the permissible limit of variation in nozzle delivery as per W&M?

MDG 2024 prints a range of ±10 ml to ±25 ml per 5 litres for an inspector's finding MDG 5.1.2(a). The exact limit is set by the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Rules, so read them or ask W&M.

02How is the 5 litre test done at a petrol pump?

MDG gives no test method. The dealer checks every nozzle before sales each day MDG 1.4.2(d) and keeps a W&M-verified 5-litre measure for pump testing only MDG 1.4.2(b). Ask your oil company for its method.

03Petrol pump me kam petrol check kaise kare?

Ask the attendant to show the zero before fuel flows and the closing reading after MDG 1.4.2(f) Circular 20.03.2025. MDG 2024 sets out no customer test with the 5-litre measure. If you doubt a nozzle, tell the dealer or your oil company and ask for the complaint book MDG 1.6(iv).

04What if a nozzle is 15 ml out in 5 litres?

15 ml is inside the ±10 to ±25 ml range. If an inspector finds it, sales go on, but the unit must be recalibrated and re-stamped within 15 days MDG 5.1.2(a). In your own morning check, any variation means reporting it and keeping the unit off MDG 1.4.2(d).

05What happens if a nozzle is short beyond the limit?

With the seals intact, sales through that unit or nozzle stop at once, and it is recalibrated and re-stamped before sales restart MDG 5.1.2(a). Short delivery with the seals intact is a minor irregularity MDG 8.4(iii)(h).

06Does the checker save what I type?

No. The sum is worked out on your own phone or computer, and nothing you type is stored or sent.
