Petrol and diesel density range at 15°C: the MDG 2024 limits

Short answer

The Marketing Discipline Guidelines 2024 (MDG 2024) give these density limits at 15°C: petrol (motor spirit) 720–775 kg/m³, diesel (HSD, BS VI up to B7) 810–845 kg/m³ and biodiesel blends B8–B20 820–860 kg/m³ MDG 7.6. A lab tests samples against these limits. Your own daily checks are different: the tanker reading against the invoice density (within ±3.0 kg/m³) and your recorded reference density MDG 1.2(iv) MDG 5.1.9.

The Marketing Discipline Guidelines 2024 (MDG 2024) are the oil companies' rules for their dealers, and bind dealers through the dealership agreement. This page is a plain-language explanation by MDG Services (a brand of VRUOOM Private Limited). It is not the official text and is not connected with or approved by IndianOil, BPCL, HPCL or any government body, so please check the current guidelines and circulars on the oil companies' own websites and with your oil company officer before you act.

Petrol pump me density kitni honi chahiye?

The limits, all at 15°C MDG 7.6:

FuelDensity at 15°C, kg/m³Standard to check
Petrol (MS): grades MG, E5, E10, E12, E15 (BS VI)720–775IS 2796 and IS 17586
Petrol (MS): grade E20 (BS VI)720–775IS 17021
Diesel (HSD): BS VI up to B7810–845IS 1460
Diesel blended with biodiesel: B8 to B20820–860IS 16531

Standards are revised from time to time, and MDG says a change in a BIS specification or test method applies at once MDG 7.6. Check the current edition of each standard, or ask your oil company, before you rely on a figure.

A footnote to the 810–845 diesel figure says any relaxation for fuel made from Assam crude may follow Government of India notifications. MDG gives no relaxed figure, so ask your oil company which range applies to you MDG 7.6.

Your own test is not this range

The range is the specification a lab tests a sample against MDG 7.6 MDG Annexure 5. The checks you make yourself are different:

  • On receipt: each compartment, converted to 15°C, within ±3.0 kg/m³ of the invoice density MDG 1.2(iv).
  • Every morning and after every load: your own density goes in the register MDG 1.4.1(c) MDG 1.2(xiv).
  • At an inspection: the density result of a sample from your outlet is compared with the density you recorded for the tank after the last receipt, once at least 50 litres have been dispensed MDG 2.10.

See the density rules in one place and the invoice check. To bring a reading to 15°C, use the ASTM table or the 15°C calculator.

Questions dealers ask

01Petrol pump me density kitni honi chahiye?

Petrol 720 to 775 kg/m³ at 15°C. Diesel has two ranges, 810 to 845 and 820 to 860, depending on the blend, as the table shows MDG 7.6.

02What is the density of petrol at 15°C?

MDG 2024 gives a range, not one figure: 720–775 kg/m³ at 15°C for every BS VI petrol grade it names, E20 included MDG 7.6. The invoice shows the density of the product loaded for you MDG 2.2.1(iv).

03What is the diesel density range?

For BS VI diesel (HSD) up to B7, 810–845 kg/m³ at 15°C. For diesel blended with biodiesel, B8 to B20, 820–860 kg/m³ MDG 7.6.

04Where can I find a petrol pump density chart?

MDG states the limits in clause 7.6 and Annexure 5 MDG 7.6 MDG Annexure 5. To bring a reading to 15°C you also need the ASTM density conversion table, which a dealer must hold but MDG does not print MDG 1.5(vi).

05If my density is inside the range, am I safe at an inspection?

Not on that alone. For a sample from your outlet, the density result is measured against the density you recorded for the tank after the last receipt MDG 2.10, and a missing record is an irregularity by itself MDG 5.1.9.
