Diesel litres to kg table (and petrol): 1, 5, 10, 20, 100 and 1000 litre diesel in kg

Short answer

1 litre of diesel weighs about 0.83 kg (0.8275 kg at the middle of the range), so 100 litres weigh about 82.75 kg and 1,000 litres about 827.5 kg. That is the middle of the diesel density range in the Marketing Discipline Guidelines 2024 (MDG 2024), the oil companies' rules for their dealers: 810–845 kg/m³ at 15°C, or 810 to 845 kg for 1,000 litres MDG 7.6. Petrol (720–775) is about 0.75 kg a litre and 747.5 kg for 1,000 litres MDG 7.6.

The Marketing Discipline Guidelines 2024 (MDG 2024) are the oil companies' rules for their dealers, and bind dealers through the dealership agreement. It is not the official text and is not connected with or approved by IndianOil, BPCL, HPCL or any government body, so please check the current guidelines and circulars on the oil companies' own websites and with your oil company officer before you act.

Diesel: litres to kg

The columns are densities at 15°C in kg/m³: the low end, the middle and the high end of the range for BS VI diesel up to B7 MDG 7.6. The middle is the halfway point, (810 + 845) ÷ 2 = 827.5. It is a guide, not a typical figure. Blends B8 to B20 run 820 to 860 MDG 7.6; use the calculator for them.

Petrol: litres to kg

Same sum for petrol, whose range is 720 to 775 MDG 7.6. The middle is (720 + 775) ÷ 2 = 747.5.

kg to litres

A lower density puts more litres in every kilo. The figures are rounded.

Density point (diesel / petrol)Diesel: litres in 1 kgDiesel: litres in 1 tonnePetrol: litres in 1 kgPetrol: litres in 1 tonne
Low end (810 / 720)1.231,2351.391,389
Middle (827.5 / 747.5)1.211,2081.341,338
High end (845 / 775)1.181,1831.291,290

How every figure is worked out

kg = litres × density ÷ 1,000, and litres = kg × 1,000 ÷ density. The litres-to-kg figures are exact, not rounded. Two checks: 1,000 × 827.5 ÷ 1,000 = 827.5 kg, and 5 × 845 ÷ 1,000 = 4.225 kg.

For example (a made-up load): the invoice shows diesel at 831.5 kg/m³ at 15°C, so 200 litres weigh 200 × 831.5 ÷ 1,000 = 166.3 kg. That sits between the middle column (165.5) and the high end (169), as it should.

Note: a litre is a volume, and the figures use the density at 15°C. General knowledge, not MDG text: a warm litre holds a little less fuel, so it weighs a little less. See density and temperature.
